H!TITDS - Shrieker (1998)

I'm not gay.

I'm sorry?

Just'cause I have short hair and I

Great body and

Don't want you to think I'm gay.

Okay. Seventeen different women.

Not one of'em was a man.

Fine.

Got a girlfriend?

Friend?

Two girlfriends.

Girlfriends.

I'm obsessive compulsive, but I'm not gay.

[Music]

Hello and welcome to Hello, this is the Doomed Show. I am the Streaker Folks, I'm joined by the Shrieker.

Hi Richard.

Do you believe that fear is the place you go to learn?

I believe that There I shr I shrieked it out.

Hmm.

Well why would you be shrieking? What are we talking about today, Richard?

Well, first of all, I'm Richard, this is Jeffrey. Hi.

And

And it is Shrieker time. We're talking about Shrieker from

I swear I kept writing down nineteen ninety because of Tubi. That is not correct.

It is uh nineteen ninety eight.

Could it be nineteen eighty eight, nineteen ninety, nineteen ninety eight, two thousand and eight? It could be any year. Who could say?

It could be twenty thirty-eight.

It is absolutely uh filmed in nineteen ninety-seven according to the never incorrect Uh IMDB.

Which is always wonderful to know that they are um absolutely accurate accurate.

Listen, shrieking is timeless.

Ha ha ha.

Groaning.

Pig sounds.

Timeless. This of course is from David Dakote too.

What is what is your feeling about uh People pronouncing it David Dakota.

Uh well I don't do Dakota.

D I do David Dakota.

Dakota. Dakota O. Dakota. Okay. Dakota. Dakota O. Dakota 2. I'm Mr. Dakota.

I don't know. I feel like they're all correct.

Especially when you uh get into his names'cause this was directed by someone totally different.

Yeah, this is Victoria Sloan.

That's such an awesome name, dude.

Yeah.

Oh man, if if David Dick Dicoto Dakota if if he happened to decide to transition, I think that would beat his new name, Victoria Sloan would be pretty badass.

Yes.

That would be awesome.

So you know the deal with David Dakota. Uh he's a wonderful man.

Uh director of many full moon productions in this period.

Um this comes sort of right smack in this this uh The the end of the glory days of uh Of full moons.

full moon's output. You know, some some still may say

Full moon's doing a great job. I would say they peaked right here.

Uh boy.

So I really want to talk about uh the writer of this film who's who's really interesting to me as well. This is Neil Marshall Stevens, who's credited here as Benjamin Carr,'cause Why not?

Neil was a collaborator with David Dakota in so many of these films uh from this period. Talisman

Uh Totem, Killer Eye, Witch House, he's the writer of all of those. He also did some other big full moon.

productions from this period like Head of the Family, The Creeps. Um, but I also wanna point'em out for something that I I don't know if you're familiar with. I love these so much.

They're the Moonbeam Entertainment films. Are you familiar with these?

Of these the kids movies.

Yeah they are. Yeah they are mentioned.

You have mentioned them before, but I have not uh Oh I have not seen any of them.

So wild.

like relatively wholesome but just deeply, deeply weird. And the others are are like goopy weird horror movies. This Neil Marshall Stevens, he um

He wrote Shrunken City, Clockmaker, Train Quest, that's a good one. Uh and one of my favorites, Phantom Town.

I would love to do Phantom Town on the show with you. I think you'd really enjoy

Really enjoy it.

Um but his biggest claim to fame as a screenwriter is is a very popular film, uh Thirteen Ghosts, the remake.

Oh my god, wow.

I feel like you can you can feel it a bit. You can feel it from his his full moon and moonbeam films, like this man is gonna go on to write thirteen ghosts one day.

My thing with that movie is is like I remembered the original

being being so much better than it was. And I never disliked, you know, the the the newer one. It's freaking wonderful.

But like I was like, Oh man, I wanna revisit the original and I'm watching the original like

Oh.

Okay. This is a thing that happened.

Yeah.

Neat stuff in it, but overall it would make a great trailer.

Sure.

Oh which reminds me here is the trailer.

For Shriek Fest. In this place.

There is a secret.

The secret.

[Music]

is there.

Six have come.

Come here to stay.

This day.

Hospital.

It's been empty for something like 50 years.

Yeah. One has found the key.

To unlock the mystery.

Somebody In this place.

Please.

Estamarán de algo.

And they're getting close. Trapped within its walls.

Walls.

Something happened.

Something happened here.

What happened here?

Seven people were killed by something.

Now.

The others must be Find a way out.

Way out.

It's not the same mark.

Somebody replaced it.

Before they Become

Yet's next victim.

Dum.

[Music]

Girl. If you hear it.

Yeah.

It's too late.

And of course, spoiler warning, we're gonna spoil this stuff.

before I forget to say this. Oh my god. Folks If you need your David Dakote, Stuff.

You need to find out all the the important details about that guy.

Listen to our talisman episode.

To hear Jeffrey's David Dakota.

Decoder.

uh important stuff. All the important titles you need to check out. So

I forgot that I did that. That's great.

The decoder. The decoder.

Yeah.

So here is the back of the uh good old Um full moon.

VHS tape this is what it says about shrieker.

If you hear it, it's too late.

It strikes with what?

What?

Sorry, I had to I had to do it.

I had to do the sound.

The shriek.

Do it.

Do it do it without me talking.

It's so it's so hard. I'm not a I'm not a pig, so it's hard for me to get my vocals to this register.

We

There you go.

Yeah.

Perfect. Here's the plot. It strikes without warning.

It can morph through walls, ceilings, floors, but There's no place to hide.

Behind every corner lies a potential doorway to death.

After fifty years the shrieker has been summoned again by Five will die tonight.

The six will become its master and

Yeah.

When you hear the sound of its voice and Your time has calm.

No Mm-hmm.

One hour, fifteen minutes.

I wanna quibble. I don't think we ever see it um phase through a a ceiling.

No, through wall through th through the same brick wall over and over again.

Yeah, that's all it does.

Oh my god. I it's so funny watching these things on Tubi.

'Cause I'm like, oh wow.

An hour and fifteen minutes, amazing. An hour and twelve minutes, awesome. And I'm like hour and forty minutes later, like, hold on.

Uh now I just ordered a bunch of Fabris. Fuck.

Need all my my plugins.

No.

Yeah.

So yes, the film starts with uh the most plainest font ever.

Yeah.

Um they could not afford papyrus. So they said, What's cheaper than papyrus? And they said, uh whatever this default font is that comes with the software. Um and of course Because of the VHS two H D. Porting over they did, the The text is all like squiggly looking from uh From from not being um

What's the word?

The anti-alias saying it's beautiful. We get two beautiful guys who work at a hospital, and we're supposed to believe this is the 1940s.

Yes.

'Cause it looks like the one guy is reading what every man, what every red blooded man was reading.

The Saturday evening posts.

I do I do my I do my curls with the a copy of the post. There's also an I I want you for the US Army sign in the background. Again to really put us in the time period.

Man, the big money, big money. Uh of course I love that he's reading a vintage copy. Somehow he

He somehow he only buys the uh the the tea stained weathered versions. Maybe they're cheaper.

Those things weren't uh weren't meant to last.

Yeah, they were old when they were new.

Exactly.

Bye. Ha ha ha ha.

Uh so yes there's a the strange sound coming from outside. There's a some figure in the foggy alley and the one guy goes to check it out.

And the other guy's like I better go check the second floor.

'Cause that's where all the patients are. Mm-hmm in this hospital. I can't help but I love how how cute These guys are David Dakota, he loved his cute hunky guys.

Sure did.

Still does.

Yep, still good bless him. God bless him.

So something in the alley attacks hunky brunette number one.

And then hunky brunette number two just sort of stands around watching, not real concerned about his pal.

Yeah.

And then uh he gets gotten too.

Um

You gotta you gotta let nature take its course.

Ha ha ha.

Uh we see the Shriekers MO which is scratching people's faces.

I kept i in my notes describing it as um shriekers giving them a facial.

Uh he's like peeling back skin layers.

So you're nice and fresh.

Sure, that's that's uh a very extreme exfoliation.

Absolutely.

Uh the music kicks in perfect, perfect nineties.

MIDI garbage where they're trying to make all the uh All the instruments sound oh so real See it sounds like a whole orchestra.

[Music]

We have

A an interesting edited by credit. I was very surprised to see this was edited by J.R. Bookwalter. Sure.

Sure sure was. This was actually his first uh uh film that he edited for full moon. He went on to do some more

Yeah after that.

After this.

That's cool. Yeah folks, look him up. He's got quite a career. Quite a career.

And then uh the music is interrupted by Gravel Man.

gravelly voiced narrator Um who will not be back later?

Uh but he has a very complicated origin story to discuss the the Shrieker but also the um vaguely Lovecrafty and talking to to describe where the shrieker comes from and who would have Yeah.

Yeah, this is our first of many lore dumps.

Uh, in in the film and which for a film that's, you know, barely over an hour long, you wouldn't expect as much lore as we get. But oh boy, there's quite a bit.

Oh my god, it's it's wild. It's wild. We're gonna get a lot of it. We're gonna get a whole lot of it. You're gonna understand everything about this. This is why there's all the shrieker novels that came out after this movie was so big.

Yeah.

Uh we cut to a beautiful California day.

As uh A gentleman named Zack and a lady named Clark who

Clark.

are are walking and talking and they're talking about squattin'.

I'll just leave that sentence hanging for just one moment longer.

Longer.

Squat talk.

Squawk.

She needs a place to live. They're they're they're college students, they're broke college students.

And she's from this the she's one of the original characters from the pilot of Two broke girls.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Maybe not.

She's a she's a math major, we find out. Um

Oh man.

Man. Zach Zach is asking her like, hey, so what's your major? Uh it's not something pointless like media studies or education L O L.

Brutal.

Brutal. Thanks a lot, Zach. You're the you're part of the problem, not the solution.

Ja.

But yeah, math major and she never discusses, you know, any anything beyond

M A T H you know, that's that's it. That's the h that's all I needed to know.

He comments on how where's your glasses?

She should have responded, Hey Zack, why is your hat?

Uh'cause he's wearing this beautiful cream colored beret. Uh

Yeah.

Yeah, they make a beret joke later about this uh another character, but he's the one wearing the fucking beret.

I guess it's more of like a Kangle hat, you know than a beret, but it's oh boy, it's so bad looking.

Yikes.

Thanks.

So they get to a place, he makes her promise not to reveal this this secret location where they're gonna be living.

Um and it's it's a it's an abandoned hospital and there's lots of rules. It's a very like uh you know, the first rule of fight club kind of a situation. Uh, you know.

The rules are amazing.

It's great housing.

Great housing for free.

But you can never tell anybody about it.

Yeah. You can never give anyone your

Give anyone your address.

Yeah. All your mail goes to a

Yeah. No calls except.

Except through a cell phone.

Now those are the absolute

Absolute rules of the house.

Rules of the house.

Okay, I get it.

You're squatting.

Some might call it that.

Well what is it? An old house or a

Building what?

Bye.

He takes her upstairs to the roof or a courtyard.

And introduces them to The other uh squatters, Jeffrey, tell me about these people.

So first of all, stop calling them squatters. It's rude. They are urban pioneers.

Oh my bad. Yes.

Yes. Yes. So these pioneers, oh we got a bunch of'em. Uh so there's Zach of the Cream Colored Beret who is bringing Clark there. Um, first of all, he does introduce Cl Clark to them and they're like, That's kinda weird that your name's Clark. You're a girl.

And she says, uh it's a Protestant thing.

You wouldn't understand that Um

Okay.

Uh they talk to Mike is introduced to us. Uh he's the one who introduces himself by saying This is his first words in the film and

I'm not gay. I've slept with seventeen different women, and none of them was a man.

Dude, turn the movie off. We're fucking done. This moment.

should have been saved for later in the movie. This guy introducing himself as not gay Mike.

Is a absolute humdinger.

This feels like David Dakota calling out someone he knows.'Cause it's just so weird.

The whole movie comes crashing down in this moment. I love it.

Love it.

And absolutely adore it.

It is important to note that he's shirtless during this um scene.

He is he's he's the ultimate Dokoto boy in this in this particular film.

And he says one of his one of his like why people think he's gay isms I just because I have short hair.

Exactly.

Exactly.

Okay.

Okay, I forgot that short hair was a gay thing.

Yeah. Yeah, she she called me out, bro. She added me to the family.

Um we also meet other colorful characters like uh Tanya, who is the uh pamphlet distributing Marxist who lives in this uh commune. Uh she's she's fun. I don't feel like they take the joke.

far enough to be to be really fun or to make Tanya much of a character.

beyond giving out pamphlets to people. Um But that's fine.

That's fine.

Uh we also have uh David.

Um who

Who is the most antagonistic towards um uh Clark throughout the movie.

And is definitely the m the most recognizable of the actors in the film.

Uh I'm just gonna say

This is played by Perry Shen, who's credited as Perry Allen, which is like Barry Allen the Flash. Ha ha ha. Um Perry Shen is n I think most well known, like I recognize him most from the Hatchet movies.

Uh yeah he's in like all of them. He dies in all of them, I think, but he's like playing another family member of the same family who just happens to look exactly like him.

Okay.

And lastly and uh most importantly, Elaine, who was introduced to us with this is Elaine. She's a bit quiet, and that's about it.

Yeah. Dude, that's that's how the uh the girlfriend in uh the Evil Dead remake.

That that twenty

Is that twenty twelve? Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah, w that the girlfriend that's like Hey.

I'm girlfriend.

I'm gonna wait around until I die horribly. I'll see you later. Hi.

Hi, I'm girlfriend.

Um

I recognize this dude from a movie that I you never hear anybody talking about ever anymore.

Two thousand Two thousand four's The Hazing.

Uh nice little uh You know, low budget.

Evil Dead kinda rip off movie with Um sorority babes and uh Fraternity bros on Halloween night and Shit goes crazy.

And Brad, I'm not it's not Halloween. It's a uh a costume Pledge fraternity party.

Gotcha.

Interest.

Yeah, it's pretty fun.

I can check it out.

I wrote in my notes that this is my favorite version of Friends.

I think they made David too much of a dick. I think they should have made him

Little more charming,'cause you know that guy can be charming. He can be funny.

For sure. Uh yeah.

Yeah, yeah.

Oh my god.

Oh my god.

He's h he has a whole ward of the hospital to himself.

I got a lot of stuff.

I got a lot of stuff. I cleaned it out myself. It's mine.

Oh.

Yeah.

We learn various other things about this hospital, like um uh they have a real rat problem. Um and also that every Thursday is big garbage day. I don't really know what that means, but I like it.

Big garbage, not your small garbage.

That night we we see the uh silhouette of of the shrieker and in here it's it's uh Non shrieking groans as it's uh rambling around the frickin' hospital.

And then we find um Some arcane symbol drawing?

Mm. And I wrote in my notes that they shouldn't be worried about these arcane symbols all over the place. It's just someone doing a self directed study.

Mm. Ha ha ha.

Um and then uh Clark who's she really wants to investigate these sounds she's hearing.

Uh so she grabs a flashlight and goes and explores the the silent hill.

Portion.

With the fog machines.

Who does she meet, Jeffrey?

So eventually she's like, I'll I'll deal with these rats and she goes down to the basement, where she meets a character I refer to as The clapper.

Um and why is he the clapper? Uh because he claps uh uh what a clap on, clap off light switch that he's installed in the basement and that he's really proud of.

Yeah.

Yeah.

He Because it's me, I'm gonna drop a commercial for the clapper right here.

Clap on.

Let you turn things on or off from anywhere in the world.

Anywhere in the room.

Yeah. Just plug in the

Television.

Lamps.

Lamp, stereo.

Almost anything.

Anything you want to clap on and off.

Wow. Clap on

The clapper is now available at all Hills Department Stores, Phase Drugs, and Wegman Food Pharmacies.

I don't know why we don't I mean, we still have clapping technology. I feel like it should have progressed and and every home should have it.

Um anyway, this basement has it and Robert installed it.

Uh this is a guy who's been living in the basement without anyone's knowledge the entire time that, you know, this motley crew of friends have been there.

Um he says that when whenever people come down, which is not very often, he hides and

Um and uh and Clark is like, Wow, this is so weird. Why why do you do this? And he has this great line where he says My motives are varied and often obscure.

Oh my god, which sounds like something out of a frickin'

Matt Farley Charlie Roxburgh movie. That sounds so much like it.

Yes.

Shout out to Matt Farley and Company.

And his flat delivery is also very moterne. Um, he has lots of other great lines. I just like wrote them all down. Uh he the aforementioned fear is the place where you go to learn about yourself.

Which I guess he learned from his father or grandfather. Oh my lord. He he says, I do go out, you know. Um which I didn't I didn't know that. It seemed like you didn't

Um We also didn't ask, which makes it sound even more suspicious.

He uh he describes himself as a collector of facts and then immediately after that says, Well, facts are overrated, of course.

Ha ha ha.

Well he'd be having a great time now.

I love when she uh she asks him about rainfall. Like w if you're not sure about a guy, if you're curious about him, maybe he's a little sketchy, just ask him what the frickin' uh the rainfall uh the yearly rainfall in Bolivia is or whatever.

or whatever. Listen, I I know you've been off the market for a while, Richard, but that's how the kids flirt these days in uh nineteen ninety eight year of our Lord.

Uh

Oh okay.

Okay. I thought I thought they they got were dating on v their Vine accounts.

Counts.

Uh yes, yes, that very much existing website. Yeah.

Yeah.

Um she does learn a little bit more about the Shrieker, which she gets the that name uh from him. He's like, Have you heard about the Shrieker? Someone's been messing around with some arcane stuff.

Uh which mostly is bullshit, but about one percent is not bullshit, he tells us. So all right, we've got we've got some breadcrumbs leading us on our trail.

So good. So good.

The uh the breadcrumbs that's just protein powder for all the ripped dudes.

Yes. Yeah. Mix it up into a shape.

In the blender.

Uh

So we've got some hilarity where uh Clark has a scratch on her back from

Uh either you know bumping into something in the dark or maybe the the shrieker got too close to her. I can't remember how she got scratched.

But um her her pals notice this And I think it's uh

Who's the communist girl? What's her Tanya, Tanya. Thank you. I think Tanya starts to like

filling up the wound.

Wound or cleaning the wound. But she's cleaning the wrong side.

Ha ha ha.

That's but you can't see what she's doing at all, so it's very awkward.

Listen, these ki these students don't have health care.

No, no, no, no. Uh I like when uh she breaks out her almanac and confirms that he was absolutely right.

Wow.

About the rainfall. That was good.

He knows so many things.

Uh of course the the sexual tension is finally boiled over

And we get a make out scene where Clark and Zach make out. Very cute.

Yeah.

They've been having a will they won't they for the first Twenty minutes of this movie.

Well, I mean she she asks him, Do you believe that fear is a place you go to learn? And he's just like

Wow, I have no idea what you're talking about. And then they start making out.

Which makes it even better.

Oh my god!

Are the fundamental

Lack of communication between the two of these. They're gonna have the worst relationship on earth. It's gonna be so bad.

Oh my god, it's so funny how terrible they are.

Meanwhile David is just being easy.

Awful. David just keeps fucking like like um Berating everybody?

Oh my god, I'm so tired of this character.

That's what it does.

What a jerk.

Is there a fake out where the it seems like the clapper is gonna get gotten by the shrieker?

Do we have a fake out or is that when it when uh he attacks Mike? I get confused.

There's a fake out much.

much

Oh.

Where we think he's dead, but he's not.

Gotcha. Okay. Why don't you tell us about when uh

Yeah. Let me make sure I'm not let me make sure I'm not skipping anything. I do have something amazing in my notes where I fell asleep. Mm-hmm. Um, I wrote in my notes The squat?

Z. Debate Colonel. Mm Marino.

No, oh gee.

Staringly at the

Absolutely.

Do you know what that was?

That was?

Uh squat squat mates debate. I don't know what they debate though.

Dude, I have no idea. But uh this is when after Mike is killed. What happens to Mike?

Oh well I've got uh some research first.

Mm.

Please go for it.

Go for it.'Cause I m one of my favorite things in movies of this period is when Uh we do some Dial up research.

Oh that's right. I I didn't write any of this down.

So so some of those bread crumbs about the shrieker and the uh murders that have possibly happened in this location lead uh Clark to do some library research on her

Dial up computer. We hear the modem churning churning. She goes on the Westbrook University.

uh library website and she does uh a very precise search. She's learned how to use her Boolean operators.

Uh and she's also doing phrase searching. Very impressive. I wish I could teach my students how to do these things. I mean I do, but they they don't do it. But she does.

And she finds a lot of good results.

Uh uh she learns that uh from several different articles, uh shriek killings go unsolved.

The attacker is described as in inhumane horror a shrieking maniac The shrieker attacks the Uh w and then amazingly after this, after she reads through these headlines and she g she makes some very concerned faces, uh there are some arcade game sound effects as a bunch of arcane symbols.

on her screen start like mashing up?

It is totally unclear what is happening here. Eventually sh uh in a later scene she says that it's uh multi-dimensional typography.

And then the character cuts her off like, I don't wanna learn anything more about this.

Yeah video game folks out there, maybe you know these sounds, but it's the

Fire, fine, fine.

Is that Frogger?

Yeah.

Or something like that. Oh my god, it was so weird to hear that.

Is that packed? Yeah.

Very Pac Man like.

Oh it's beautiful.

Oh my god.

That's a great scene. Great, great, great computer scene in film.

That's computers.

Yeah.

Uh so uh yes, so uh Mike gets gotten in the alley.

Yes. So it's it's not not long after this that we start getting into the shrieker carnage.

Um which is, you know

It is what it is. It's usually somebody just kind of wandering around in the alley. The shrieker phases out from the brick wall, makes the pig sounds. Um this is my favorite shrieker kill scene because it's kind of the longest and it also has

Um, so for instance, uh the shrieker doesn't like to be directly seen by you, so he's always right behind you. And if you whirl really fast to try to catch him, he will just move really quickly to stay behind you. Uh and Mike is doing this while both.

Bug eyed and smacking gum the whole time?

Ha ha ha.

Uh there's also an empty tuna can toss fake out where there's just like I guess presumably it's the shrieker who just throws a can of empty tuna.

Oh it's beautiful. Um and that's

This is like in uh Last of Us when it's like this one can reason, this one can think.

It was hunting me.

Did it throw a can of tuna? I don't think so.

And then, you know, the shrieker eventually gives gives Mike that facial While uh we do an extreme close up and bloody faced Mike just goes, Ah, I'm so exfoliated

Yeah.

Thank you, Shrieker. What what does the Shrieker look like to you?

Oh boy.

Okay, so the Shrieker is a beautiful, beautiful man.

Um, so apparently this is a bit of trivia. There was uh according to IMDB, quote, another company was set to do the effects on this movie, but backed out on short notice. And that is the vibe that the Shrieker gives

off. Uh it seems like it was cobbled together quite quickly. It looks like a sort of like um Uh so it's got two heads, but both of those heads sort of look like A chimpanzee skull that's had its had its skin ripped off.

Uh it's got this shock of like Albert Einstein hair on the top.

And it's just sort of dressed in um rags. Um you rare you you see the shrieker really clearly on the cover uh of the VHS.

Uh on the box art, but you do not see the Shrieker ever very clearly in the film. And that's because they were clearly sad about it.

In the flashback at the beginning, I it's sort of wearing a hospital gown. Yes.

Yeah.

Okay. That's that's the way I was remembering it. Yes.

Yes. It does change outfits later. So it's like he got a you got an outfit um upgrade.

Ha ha ha.

Yeah.

So after the discovery of Mike, uh they decide to go hunting this shrieker, and we hear that famous uh Aerosmith song.

David's gotta Yes, of course David would be the gun toting asshole of the group.

Go figure.

He's got a lot of stuff.

So paranoia starts to sink in between all these characters because no one wants to believe This shrieker legend.

So everyone's kind of like Well maybe it's you and someone says, I'm tired of this Scooby-Doo bullshit.

Hehehehe.

Love it.

Love that. Um, but Zach sounds legit insane, so I don't really blame anyone for thinking that Zach is crazy and he's the one doing it.

It's very fun.

I don't know kind of Halloween bullshit you're pulling here.

But I want you out of here.

Out of here.

Yeah.

I was here first. I found this place. I staked it out. I'm trying to preserve it.

You know Zach, you don't try to think with your head instead of your dick. Hey, fuck you.

Fuck you.

You think I don't know what this is about?

The bow?

This is like some kind of

Fucked up Scooby Doo episode.

You're trying to scare us out.

Maybe you and Zack worked the whole

Yeah.

What's the matter? Want the whole fucking hospital for yourselves? Fine!

Fine, I'll leave. I'll find out.

I'll find some place else to see.

No.

No, no, you don't have to go anywhere.

Yeah.

Ah, but then we get the amazing reveal that Of of what's going on here.

Uh What i what is Elaine's secret?

So it does become a who done it for a while, like where it's like, Well, people are dying, w there are all these bodies and they even start to believe a little bit in like the the shrieker stuff, like the the lore.

Um but but eventually it is shown to us. Oh no, it's

It's the quiet one. It's Elaine. Elaine just standing in the alley, of course, pulls off her shirt and to reveal a lacy bra underneath, and but more importantly Some cool arcane tattoos on her tummy, and

Um she says, in case you're wondering, these are symbols of power as she's rubbing her tummy sensually. Uh she says that um basically the symbols mean that she um

is in control of the Shrieker basically, that the Shrieker can't hurt her. It's kind of like a vaccination, she s she says.

She says.

Yes. Um and that she is commanding the shrieker, kind of, to kill five people so that she gets

power or something. It's it's a little unclear. In fact her motives for doing all of this are really unclear too. Uh they ask why you know, Clark's like, Why are you doing this? And she responds rhetorically, Why am I doing this?

You wouldn't understand.

It's hard to explain, said It's Horrifying, but thrilling really

Ha ha ha.

She does not explain why she's done that.

Oh, I love this movie's ability to tease stuff we want to see.

Like You have a character who, you know, in an older film Would have gotten naked, would have Teasing nudity with the sexy bra, but also she's teasing stuff that would have been cool in a movie.

Movie.

Well, uh sadly Elaine starts itching her back. Ow, it burns. What's what's wrong?

Oh no, she has the arcane symbol mashup on her back and that means that the shrieker's gonna attack her now. And it does, and it like slaps her with its claws and she's dead.

And why is that? Well, it turns out the real villain was Clapper.

Uh who we thought was dead, but he's not. He's alive.

Yes. We had a fake out where the bolt lord he got shot in the stomach accidentally by

David or somebody. And of course oh those are blanks. But now

There's no more blanks in the gun. Now it's real bullets.

It's so real. Um and uh he says that he conspired with Elaine. He he drew those fake tattoos on her uh on her tummy.

Um and he says he did it because, quote, it became clear to me her motives were conflicted. She was unserious, which I do have to agree with. However, his motives are also unclear and vague.

Um I don't know why these people want to control the street.

He's more sincere.

Okay.

Yeah.

Are those girls being bad?

No, no, I was just clapping'cause he's he's a clapper.

I was clap.

I thought you were trying to get No

No. Oh no, clapping would do nothing to them.

Okay.

Yeah, they are unmoved.

So Clark is a smarty and And and she figures out how to get rid of the shrieker.

And and does some uh

Some some spelling of her own. Yes, yeah. And the shrieker goes bye bye.

Bye bye and she stabs it. Yeah, that that worked.

I mean I'm thinking's what she did.

I didn't write that down. I know the shrieker like has a special effect and disappears.

Yeah.

Very special.

Yeah.

So now that the place is filled with the dead bodies of their friends.

Zach and Clark who are only remaining non shriekers.

Decide to go sleep in the park.

Let's go sleep in the park.

Whereas I would stay in the the abandoned hospital'cause now it's safe.

True, but there are some dead bodies in there.

You got a couple of days.

Before the rats eat them, yeah.

Exactly.

Yeah.

And that is that is it. That's the shrieker. Them

The the extended meat cute of uh Zach and Clark continue. Yeah.

Yeah. Yep.

Um I did look up Clark's name.

Uh it just means clerk or cleric.

in the Protestant denominations.

There you go.

Yeah, that's my trivia.

Let's hear your trivia.

So, okay. Um I gave you a few little uh bits and bobs. Uh the most fascinating thing to me.

And this is mind blowing. And it's not something you would know by watching it in its currently available version, which is on VHS. This movie was filmed in scope.

two thirty five said.

Can you believe that?

Oh my god.

'Cause it's crop four three, you know, for the VHS.

I'm sorry, Jeffrey. It is I believe it's cropped less than four three.

The version on Tubi is tight. And I mean like I thought it was weirdly more than a VHS.

like uh screen uh

Aspect ratio. It was very weird. Yeah.

So I I hope that one day, uh, you know, full moon has been Slowly but surely releasing their films back on

um on on Blu ray in in pretty nice pretty nice copy. So I hope one day they they return.

To these uh Dakota classics and put them out.

Um but you y I will say that if you watch the um

the closing credits you will see that they're very clearly in two thirty five. They're in scope.

Um so yeah, the whole film the whole film was at one point. I would love to see we'll see the entire alley.

In scope.

I wanna say the trailer I that I played, I I found a trailer for it.

is squished in a weird uh like

somebody when they ripped it, they ripped it weird. But I think it's a widescreen trailer for this film. So I mean I'm still getting over the fact that I have frickin' uh sorority babes and the slime ball bollarama in widescreen. Like that I never

suspected that that movie was a widescreen movie until I had that version. I was like, wow.

Wow.

Yeah, really? Yeah. So that's cool.

Oh that's cool. David was doing beautiful things.

Was was Nightmare Sisters was that also? Yes.

Yeah it is. I think so.

That's incredible.

Yeah.

I have I just haven't watched that in a while.

But I have the The vinegar sandstorm frickin' movie.

Yeah, the only other one from this period that uh of Dakota's that was put out, I believe, other than maybe the Puppet Master movies he did

Which I know those are out. Um uh Beach Babes from Beyond recently Ish got a release too.

Nice. So here's hoping, here's hoping. So uh apparently also according to IMDB there was a sequel that was planned where the Shrieker would return with three heads instead of two. Beautiful. Uh

Uh

That's cute.

Uh

Here's a piece of trivia that you would never expect. The film was shot in six days.

Uh how did they manage to do that?

Oh my god, the intricacies of the story, the the uh

The blocking. Oh my god. Uh

Uh but my last piece of trivia and my favorite is that this is a full moon production and you know, even with some of their not so successful ones, you should know what to expect.

There are Three shrieker action figures that are available in the Full Moon's Legends of Horror series.

Oh that's cool.

You can find them on eBay. They are they are inexpensive. Um but yeah, there's one of the there's there's it they're basically it's a t it's the same figure but there's variants.

Um so there's one with his like uh his uh hospital gown outfit. There's one with like the tattered outfit, different colored hair.

Yeah.

Um so yeah, pick up all three Shrieker action figures today.

Ha ha ha.

Man, I'll p Frickin' I'll pre order'em.

You know, I don't have to pre order them. I can just order'em, but I'll pre order.

So Jeffrey, how do you feel?

y'all

About the the Shriekenator.

Well, you know, what can you say? I I'll use the the lines of dialogue from the film to sum up how I feel about Shrieker.

Uh one line of dialogue is quote like some fucked up Scooby-Doo episode.

And the second line of dialogue and my final words on this film are There is wisdom to be found here, said Dark wisdom.

Richard, how do you feel about Shriek or

I didn't love this.

Uh I I Yeah. It was a little I think one of my things is David Dako too.

And I'll I'll reference another film I just watched recently that did not help me get in the mood for this.

is doing the the plot with some pretty young people Go to a same location.

And kill You know, uh seventy five minutes.

Yeah.

I like the more dynamic stuff. That's why I like sorority babe and slime ball bularama.

is you've got The imp?

Is a character.

And you've got the uh that guy who's always played janitors or like drunks.

Playing a a drunk janitor.

Yeah.

So yeah, you're in this same location, but you've got like other stuff to kind of distract it. This needed a crazy Ralph.

type of character. And I just I just got so tired watching this. And the movie I blame for me not being in the mood for this was We recently revisited Hide and Go Shriek.

Which is it it feels like the most David Dakota movie that he didn't make.

Except for the you know, the the female nudity and not enough gu shirtless guys in it.

In this movie's defense, the versus hide and go shriek.

There's a point in Hide and Girl Shriek where they've been running around with the lights off.

In the uh Department stores so long that that when they finally turn the lights on at the end of the movie when the cops show up, my eyes almost started watering with happiness.

My eyes were so tired of staring at that fucking shitty looking movie. But anyway.

I like the clunkiness, I love the lore obviously.

Um the the The lack of shrieking was funny to me.

Now you haven't seen any of Takoto's thirteen thirteen films yet, have you?

No. Okay. So so until you've seen one of those, I don't think you can fully appreciate the the the dynamism of uh Shrieker.

Uh,'cause that takes uh people wandering around in a single location to to depths you didn't know were possible.

Although

I have seen one of his later ones. I've seen Prison of the Dead. Okay.

Okay. Sure.

Which um Prison of the dead.

So so this this has a three point nine And you know, I'm not a big I am D V person.

But alarm bells kinda start going off.

under three. You know, and uh Prison of the Dead has two point eight, so stick with Shrieker.

Sure.

Thank you.

But yeah, I d I was like, Hey, let's check in on David Dakota, you know, in the early two thousands I went, Oh geez, oh boy.

I love every period. I I even just, you know, was sort of throwing some some shade on the thirteen thirteen movies, but I love'em.

I I I own all of them that are available on D V D

Yeah.

Although we did lose the we did lose the threat at one point. We've been talking about the uh the famous director Victoria Sloan.

Oh that's true. That's true.

So I don't know why we're talking about this David guy.

Who's that?

But yeah, as far as like full moon movies released this time This is this is fine.

I definitely recommend Talisman more than this. Right.

Right.

Yeah. Talisman is is uh m more Dakota than this one is.

It's more of a movie.

It's wild.

Wild.

It is wild.

Locations are absolutely better. That Romanian fucking castle, that'll be right.

[Music]

Jeffrey before I let you escape the second floor of this hospital.

Uh on the show. We talk about Are recently seen and loved movie

It can be a first time watch or an old favorite. What do you got?

So I'm going to recommend a

much more recent David Dakota film. Uh this is one that is Genre.

But a very different genre than you might expect.

In recent years, David Dakota has largely shifted away from horror.

and is now making almost exclusively lifetime thrillers.

And

Christmas movies. So I'm gonna recommend one of his Christmas movies, my favorite of those I've seen.

It is titled Runaway Christmas Bride from twenty seventeen.

Oh my goodness. This movie is so bonkers. Yeah, my my biggest criticism of the lifetime movies he's been making and like the lifetime adjacent movies he's been making in the past few years is that they're actually like pretty competent And um uh nondescript.

Um there they don't you know, sometimes lifetime movies are the wackiest things you've ever seen and I enjoy that aspect and y you kinda wish he would bring more of that to them. And by and large he doesn't. Um

But that's not the case with this one. Um, which I don't think i it's not technically a lifetime movie, though you wouldn't be surprised to see it airing on uh on their network or streaming service. But oh boy, this movie is just so wild.

Um, he's really going so out outside of the bounds of like what you would expect is like the normal beats for a Christmas romance.

Um I don't want to say too much about it, other than to say like you just need to see it.

Um I think it's like it's e it's entering my rotation.

It's it's one I want to watch like every year. Um it makes me laugh so much.

Check it out.

Well, we will we will add it to our our list for this year. Absolutely maybe we'll do it in July.

Yeah.

There you go.

That's perfect'cause it's it's not very Christmassy, as is as is typical.

Ha ha.

Ha ha ha.

That's so bad. I love it.

Huh.

It's like they forgot the rules.

Yeah.

So what about you? What have you seen recently and loved?

So I watched a twenty twenty four horror movie.

That had been on my radar for quite a while.

Yeah.

Uh called Oddity, Mm. From uh director Damien McCarthy.

And uh I absolutely loved it. Um It was like Insidious or conjuring, but not shitty.

Mm-hmm.

I just really enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It's uh it's spooky as hell.

and uh very, very well made, very beautifully shot.

Full of dread.

And uh yeah, yeah, it had some uh It felt like And just a good solid movie that uh It didn't have anything embarrassing in it.

Didn't break any new ground,

Mm-hmm. But it's a it's a good combination of things.

And all of it all of its delivery is solid. The cast is exceptionally good. Love the cast.

Nice. Is this an English language film?

Yes, this is a I believe this is a British

British, yeah. I'd heard about it when it came out. Um I think it's on

Oh excuse me, Irish. It's Irish.

Irish, okay.

Yeah, I remember people saying good things and I just I haven't checked it out yet.

It's got a guy from um that Liet and I recognize from Midsummer Murders.

I was one of the leads Um he was one of uh The second Barnaby's

Detectives. Uh DS Charlie Nelson for those in the know, if you know you know.

I know you're a big Midsummer Murder's head.

I've watched a couple episodes.

Yeah.

Oh yeah, we've we've we've we've come so far we like when they switched the main detective, I was like, Nope, nope, unacceptable, no, no, no. And the guy is like

No, they're good. I'm like, okay. So we've been watching the new ones. They're great. Great show. Nice.

Nice.

We need your British mystery.

Your British mystery frick?

So so Jeffrey, let's talk about Uh let's let's give the folks a preview of what we're gonna talk about next.'Cause I we had a uh A discussion We're we're gonna come back to Dokoto.

But I think next we should go with Something creepy crawly.

Something frassoy.

Yeah, we need to get our film mirage.

I'll get my uh My film Mirage presents T shirt.

What's what's that in the distance? Is it a film or is it just a mirage?

Weren't you?

We're talking about crawlers.

Yeah.

Uh is that also called contamination point seven? Correct.

Correct.

Yep, that's the alternate title there. Um, it has some wonderful stuff. I'm very excited to revisit that and talk about it with you. And hey Seriously, the best thing about Shrieker.

I was talking about it with you, Bud.

Woohoo.

So folks, if you're on the fence About watching Shrieker, just remember.

If you watch it, you get to talk to Jeffrey about it.

Yeah, you can just well, no, you can't. Don't do that.

1800 shriek me.

Ha ha ha.

One eight hundred pink squeal.

All right folks, take care and stay off that second floor.

But what?
